I woke up yesterday feeling so crap. The girls were crying, I couldn't breath, and Keven had to be up and gone by 7:15. We just trudged through the morning with the most productive accomplishment being that I got the kids' hair washed. And I vacuumed. Then it was an early lunch and naps for all of us, as we struggle to get past our funky feelings. A cold coming on? A bad morning? Didn't know.
Then Katka, my Slovakian friend whose husband is in Keven's MBA cohort, called and wanted to see what we had planned for the afternoon. She was either going to come over for coffee or head out for some shopping. I suggested that we do both. So I loaded up the kids, now in a much better mood for having slept, and picked up Katka. The four of us took three hours to hit the big three in economy shopping: Walmart, Sam's Club, and Aldi - the best grocery store ever. What a fun change of pace from having to manage these tasks with the kids and no assistance. Katka is a genius with children, and we had a fun time turning a dull, lonely task into something much more social.
As we went to drop Katka off at her apartment, only a few minutes' walk from ours here at Eagle Heights, she invited us inside for a few minutes. And our evening together grew from there. She said, what about dinner? You should give Keven a call. Her husband, Rasty, was going to be home any minute. So I left the girls with Katka - who gave them a bath as a way of keeping them entertained in her toy-less house - went back to our place to drop off the groceries.
Keven arrived home. We went back to Katka's house for dinner. The girls got dressed. Rasty came home. Then Ilsa choked a little on a chip or a peanut and threw up all over herself, me, and their carpeting. Luckily it is apartment carpet! Massive amounts of cleaning ensued. Keven went back to our place for fresh clothes for everyone, and he brought over the Blue's Clues movie to keep the girls occupied. Once everything settled down again, the girls were in their jammies happily watching Blue, and we adults feasted on Katka's impromptu soup & spaghetti diner. Wonderful.
Once the girls had thoroughly run out of energy - now pushing 10pm - we went home and Keven, Katka and Rasty went out to join the other MBAs at their weekly drink fest downtown. The girls collapsed in a stuffed animal-covered heap, I read for a bit and fell asleep myself. Keven dragged his tushy in by 1:30. All in all, a surprisingly entertaining departure from how I imagined my day was going to go, considering how badly we started.
