Friday Party Day

Friday morning, the girls and I hurried to our morning of entertainment: gingerbread house decorating party! Our MOMS Club president constructed these houses using graham crackers and a glue gun, so they aren't edible. The candies for decorating, however, were consumed in mass quantities.

Ilsa's is on the left (she made a shape out of marshmallows that looks like the letter P), and Juliette's is on the right. I accidentally bought green frosting instead of white, so we made a pair of matching suburban houses and used coconut flakes for snow. Ilsa was much more interested in eating the frosting than decorating, but she was willing to participate as long as she had frosting on her spoon. Juliette was keen on making sure there was a door and window for her Teddy Grahams bear.

Now, we have to field the question of what to do with these masterpieces. After all, they cannot be eaten. I heard a woman at the party mention that they would leave their gingerbread house out for Santa Claus on Christmas Eve. Good plan! So in addition to a cookie and a glass of milk, we'll be leaving gingerbread houses for Father Christmas, too. Now I have to recite this "tradition" to Juliette fairly consistently for the next eight days in order to convince her that the house is not a toy, a cake, or something that will be sticking around forever.

After our party and a bit of grocery shopping, we came home for a good nap (the kids) and pizza-making (for me). I volunteered the pizzas as our contribution to the Joint Venture Club Holiday Party, which was held last night. (Have I mentioned that I designed and manage that website?) I felt like Cinderella, having a dozen chores to complete before escaping to the ball, with laundry, cooking, kid prep, me prep, and kitchen clean-up. It was a family event, so Jenn (a fellow MBA spouse who lives nearby) was there with her husband and their 2 1/2-year-old son Calvin. That worked out well, because the girls had one of their friends to play with.

There was a lot of food and drink to be had in the penthouse community room of an apartment building where two of our members live. The pizza turned out well, and we all stuffed ourselves silly. Talk about soporific! The fireplace and wine didn't help in fending off the sleeping feelings. We would have liked to stay longer but alas, the girls - even with solid two-hour naps - could only hold out so long. We got them in bed around 10pm! I knew everyone there, once again surprising me as to how many friends I have made in the past four months. Now on to Ilsa's birthday party...!
