My Bad

I have seriously fallen down on the whole blog thing this week! My bad. I've been busy doing many, many things that hardly seem outstanding enough to mention. Even my Arts Corner has been quiet because I am determined to finish The Virgin's Knot before starting on the movie, opera, and play I have lined up., even though I have been active with both my exercise and music lectures.

These are just the daily details of an educating mom's activities with her family. It was a busy, involved week with very little by was of truly profound, note-worthy results. But for my own record, here goes:

Saturday: Juliette's ballet class and really cold temps.

Sunday: Slept in, then worked like crazy to get caught up from the weekend while Keven went on his skiing trip in the afternoon. The kids were bonkers in the morning, which they always seem to be when in Daddy's Lord of the Flies mode, but they settled down after naps, and we ended up having a really quiet evening with just the three of us.

Monday: The MOMS Book Club showed up at our house when I hosted the discussion of Sleeping with Schubert. Five moms and six children arrived, so our place was a little tight with folks. About half the women finished the book, and the reviews were decidedly mixed: funny, yes, but light and hard to swallow for some. And what exciting book will we be reading for next month? The Time-Traveler's Wife! How cool is that? Shelley picked it without knowing that I just finished it and have been raving about it to everyone I meet. So at least Book Club won't conflict with my new reading project, at least not for March.

Tuesday: We ran errands all morning, going to Aldi, Brennan's, Walgreen's, and the library - certainly a shorter list than the actual hassle of accomplishing all of that should warrant! Then, I tried to take the girls out sledding in the afternoon, but the snow has melted all along the sidewalks. Every time I had to cross a sidewalk to get to another snowy area, the sled skidded noisily across the concrete. Ilsa was not happy about that! After roughly 200 yards, they wanted to go back, so we wound up playing in the backyard for probably no more than 30 minutes.

Wednesday: I hosted yet another MOMS Club function, this time my regular bi-weekly play group. However, because of various illnesses, only Ilona and her two boys were able to attend. That was fine with me after all the chaos of our Monday meeting. After naps, we dunked the girls in the tub, quickly, before I headed off to ballet.

Thursday: We went to Rocky Rococco's for a kids pizza party at their in-house theater. The girls ate their fill of pizza, watched Madagascar, and generally enjoyed a very unusual experience for us. They have never seen a movie screen before, so Ilsa, especially, kept mentioning the giant "tee-wee" (TV). However, after about 45 minutes, almost all of the children were bored and running around. Ilsa tripped, cried, and generally lost her composure, so we went home for naps. I may never know how that riveting piece of cinema ends...

After naps, I drove the kids over to Lisa's house. She and I were partnered for a Meals on Wheels delivery. She watched her son and my girls while I drove around handing out the dinners. I spent my time burning gas money, while she spent her time wrangling small things.

Keven was late getting home from his last class, so I was late getting out to the monthly Joint Venture Club dinner. Last week, on the night of the big snowstorm, we had nine RSVPs for dinner. That would have been great fun! But because we had to postpone the dinner, those same people could no longer attend. Dan and I were the only ones who showed up! But I had skipped the pizza at Rocky Rococco's, packing my own homemade sandwich and carrot sticks with the promise of eating what I wanted that evening, so we stuck around. After drinks, a huge meatball sandwich, and some interesting conversation - during which time even those people who had indicated they might arrive a little later failed to materializ - we called it a night. I cannot remember the last time I had dinner with a man other than Keven. It must have been Richard, and even that was a platonic friendship thing because Keven and I were already together, but I cannot recall anything specific. A strange turn of events. Afterwards, I drove to Borders and hung out for another hour before taking my sinfully delicious cannoli home with me.

Friday: End of the week. Finally. Katka came over for lunch. I made a big, tasty feast and she stayed for about three hours. The girls behaved very well and even managed to sleep while she and I talked. We planned a "Carrie and Katka" day for next week - an entire day away from our families to go to the salon, shopping, out to lunch, the art museum, and then to the JVC Oscar party. Sweet! After she left, I watched too much afternoon TV, developed a wretched headache, and generally slacked on everything I had planned to do tonight.

There. Now I'm caught up. I have to go to sleep because Juliette's dance class is first thing tomorrow morning. At least it won't be as cold as last week!
