On Monday, we promised the girls to take them swimming this morning - with Keven - followed by a trip to the library. We had a great time, and it was nice for the four of us to get out, together, for a while after a crazy week.
Juliette insisted on bringing her baby doll, Juli, with us, to which I agreed - as long as Juli stayed in the car. When Keven was trying to buckle Juliette's seatbelt, she started to cry because Juli couldn't fit in the belt. She wanted Juli to be safe in the car! Keven came up with the idea of putting Juli in the middle seat, between Ilsa and Juliette, and using that seatbelt instead. Problem solved. You know you've done a solid job of instilling any given safety measure when a three-year-old starts to cry because her doll won't be safe without it.
At swimming, both girls demonstrated their acquired bravery. Juliette walked done all of the shallow-end steps until she reached the floor of the pool. At that most shallow end, the floor is only three feet deep, but that comes fully up to her chin. She was scared to put her feet down, at first, but by the end of our time she insisted that she could walk up the steps - from the bottom - on her own.
Ilsa is a full-on fearless jumper. She will stand at the edge of the pool, count "one," and then fly into the air. It's a trick trying to catch her and keep her head from going under, for which she is not yet ready. Juliette tried to jump off by reaching forward and grabbing our arms first, for support, but by the time we were ready to go, she was jumping in unassisted as well. Overall, I am glad that they have progressed to the point of feeling so comfortable with us in the water.
