Our Big Saturday, Part I

Wednesday, we spent most of the day with Katka and her nanny-baby, Lake. Thursday, we spent most of the morning with Jenn and her son, Calvin. Friday, we spent most of the day inside by ourselves - it was over 90F/30C and sunny, so little babies do not last very long playing outside. So by Saturday, we were in need of a change of scene.

Our Saturday was a lovely series of activities sandwiched between an inauspicious morning and an evening that just went on and on. The morning started off with tears and tempers, so I hustled everyone around to get ready to make an earlier bus than I had planned to catch. We needed out! And Saturdays mean... farmer's market!

We ate breakfast beside a fountain on campus, under a shady tree, which really served to reset everyone (me!) after the girls' morning tears and trials. Then we traversed State Street to reach the Capitol, but we ducked into the Children's Museum before heading off to the market. I am not sure if we will renew out membership in the fall, because it is not an extensive museum and we will not necessarily be here all next year to make use of it, but I find it a relief to just pop into the museum without worrying about the cost of the experience. Whether we stay ten minutes or two hours (we did the latter), it's never a problem.

We had to leave the museum before the girls were ready, which was a shame. After two hours, they had not exhausted their supply of fun. I was writing in my mini notebook between arbitrating and negotiating the museum for the girls, so I did not care how long we stayed. Plus, the place was almost entirely empty. Wanna go to the museum without all of the annoying little kids everywhere? Go on Saturday mornings during the market! But, oh crap, the market! We had to leave before all the vendors packed up and went home.

We made it to the market just in time, grabbing two-for-one danishes at one stall (this particular one sells at a discount to get rid of their stock before packing up) and discounted cheese curds at another (because no one wants day-old cheese curds). Yay! More picnicking, this time in the shadow of the Capitol. And then it was off to the library before heading home.

(A note: all of this walking around was done in 90F/30C heat. Drat summer! The girls took turns in the single stroller, and when they were not in the stroller, they alternated between walking and riding on my shoulders. So I was exhausted and very, very smelly by the time we arrived home.)

Part II to follow.
