I have no intention of competing with the Smart Bitches when it comes to cover snarking, but I had to share this monstrosity. I picked up Lisa Kleypas's Devil in Winter at a Half Price Books for only $1 - who could resist? The cover is banal enough, if a little too Kincaid with its nauseating pink sky, but I enjoy the winter scene and the type face.
The step-back cover, however... sweet baby Jebus!
The perm gone wrong, the friggin' shirtless cape, the "honey, I'm so hot for you that I resist frostbite" setting - make it stop! Why does he get to wear boots when she's barefoot in the snow? And look at the teeny, tiny manor house in the distance! Not to judge what floats everyone's individual boats, but I do not find the impending loss of limbs sexy in the least.
Sigh. In romance, we have progressed so that such terrors do not afflict the front cover so often, but I am curious as to why editors and publishers still believe that these scenes sell more books. Does that thing make anyone hot? Has any market research been compiled? Keven, get on that pronto.
In your library, Annie, I thought I saw It Happened One Autumn from this series. Does it have sport something as tragic as this?

Mwahahaha -thanks for the link to the Smart Bitches Trashy Books. Hysterical!
I have the e-book version and I'm not sure if it has the step-back cover. Let met check...
Okay, no step-back cover. Just the picture of a garden and a fountain. The hero / heroine do a lot of kissing in a garden so that's probably why it's featured.
