An Anniversary of Sorts

Ten years ago this evening, Keven and I shared our first kiss. We've been together ever since. I only remember because a) for a move or two, I kept the ticket stub of the club we attended that night, and b) because we got married exactly nine months later.

The club was on the UEA campus, a monthly event called Club Retro that played music from the 70s and 80s. Keven had driven up from London to attend a Suede concert the next day, and he, Richard and I walked over from my dorm. I was hot: skinny, incredibly short, bright red hair, brave, braless, and clad in an all-black outfit that included hipsters (that I could no longer fit when I donated them to Goodwill years later) and a velvet halter top (that Keven couldn't remove without help).

Andy joined us later. We danced. We fled in horror of a horrible Monkees cover band. Keven tried to teach me how to play pool. Andy helped by claiming Richard as his partner for a doubles competition, thereby sticking me with Keven on purpose. If you've seen cliched movies where a man has to wrap his arm around a woman to teach her how to do some sporty thing (pool, golf, etc.)--that was us. I was very conscious of playing out the cliche as it happened!

We left Andy and Rich to go get drinks, and I took his hand so we wouldn't get separated in the crowd. He later told me that was the moment he knew I was interested, as if playing pool had not been obvious enough. Men! The Coke he bought me sprayed all over my hot outfit, and when we finally got around to kissing, Michael Jackson's "Bad" was playing in the club. Oh, romance! As Jen would say: "Good times."

When Kara and I celebrated our tenth wedding anniversary I must admit I was a little bit stunned. We have now been going out for over 14 years....and I was impressed when we managed 14 days.

Club Retro? I deny ever going. I remember the waterfront club night the same week more, not only Keven was vying for your affection (plus the music was much better).

10 years, bloody hell indeed! Yes, that's Andy. And no, it was not love at first sight. We had met a week earlier at Andy's house, and Keven steadily ignored me throughout the night. He was quite a shy boy ;)

Then again, compared to me at that time even Freddy Mercury would have looked shy and retiring.
