Happy Birthday, Ilsa

At 11:17 am EST on this day in 2003, Ilsa popped into the world. (As opposed to Juliette, who crawled out slowly and painfully, Ilsa was a pretty quick birth.) Our low-key celebration yesterday lasted all of about ten minutes. We decided to have it a little early this year so she has a chance to play with her presents before we leave on Tuesday. She received a horsey stick (like Juliette's birthday present, but black instead of brown) and a safari set, complete with animals, people, a truck, and accessories.

And, as per usual, I baked an Elmo cake... like last year, and the year before that. I asked her if she wanted something different but, like Juliette and her customary Blue's Clues cake, Ilsa only wanted tried-and-true Elmo. I'm getting good at that -- didn't even need the decorating instructions this year. One of these days, they'll get bored and I'll have to learn new tricks.

This year, she's mixed up Father Christmas with birthdays. When my mom and dad called to sing her "Happy Birthday," she thought my dad was Father Christmas calling to say hi. She's just developed enough to start working with this information, trying to sort through it all, but young enough to get the general idea of "I GET PRESENTS" mixed together. Screw details -- gimme the goods!

Happy birthday to Ilsa!

It's been fun watching Ben try to puzzle out Christmas. He's been begging to hang up his stocking for several days now.

KT started chanting "Let's put up the Christmas tree" the day after Halloween... and begs daily to unwrap the few gifts already under the tree for relatives.

Happy Birthday, Ilsa!

And just FYI, Father Christmas goes by a different handle on this side of the pond. That may be why your emails to frxmas@northpole.com keep bouncing back...
