Keven Says: Cheesy Hot Dogs Wrapped in Bacon Are Good

I hope everyone this side of the Atlantic (between Mexico and Canada) enjoyed their 4th of July holiday. We did. Carrie and I watched Iron Man sans kids [Review coming Sunday.], then we went to our friends' home and had fantastic chili and hot dogs stuffed with cheese and wrapped in bacon. Finally we went back home to eat ice cream and watch the fireworks from our balcony. All-in-all, a good day.

Jesse Helms also died.

I'm a little conflicted about this point. Obviously as a human being I'm against pretty much everything the racist, bigoted scum ever did, but he's been out of any position of power since 2003. Therefore his death, though it might have been useful a couple of decades ago, is really immaterial now.

Everyone knows his positions on race and his positions on homosexuality. From a British, left-of-center position, they were and are pretty abhorrent. What I didn't know about (being only nine at the time) was his work trying to get the US aligned on the side of the Argentine generals against the UK during the Falklands War in 1982. I have a bunch of theories about why this might happen (also related to his support of apartheid-era South Africa and Pinochet-era Chile), but I'll save that for the comments if anyone cares.
